Berry dominates Novice National Forensics Association National Tournament

Berry College recently hosted the Novice National Forensics Association National Tournament and won nine awards. The tournament is an annual speech competition for first-year forensics students. This year, the Berry College Forensics Union sent six students to compete. The team earned various awards in different categories, including 2nd place sweepstakes in Division One. Berry College student newspaper receives prestigious awards

Berry College's student newspaper, the Campus Carrier, received 22 awards at the annual Georgia College Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest. The Campus Carrier won second place in general excellence, second only to the University of Georgia's newspaper, The Red and Black.

Fulbright Scholar Travels Far

Vanessa Rice '23 is headed to St. Gallen, Switzerland, on a Fulbright Scholarship where she will draw on a rich background in the humanities to teach English conversation classes to high schoolers in the upcoming year. This grant represents a highly competitive placement in Switzerland, which has only three teaching awards in total. Initially attracted to a career in the Foreign Service, she is open to other opportunities, such as teaching, that play to her strengths: learning languages, bridging cultural gaps and connecting with people.

Nursing Students Awarded Scholarship

To qualify for the inaugural Bailey Morgan Scholarship, students must have a high school GPA of 3.75 or greater. All scholars received direct admission to the nursing program, additional scholarship support and opportunities to engage in local clinical settings throughout their four years at Berry.

Daniel Hanberry, a biology major enrolled in the Master of Science in Global Health at Duke University, recently completed two summer research projects at the Institut National de la Recherche Biomedicale in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Berry College's Forensics Union dominates tourneys

Berry College's speech and debate team dominated in recent state and national tournaments. The Forensics Union is Berry's competitive speech and debate team. At the National Speech Championship, held synchronously online this year, every Berry student made it to the national quarterfinals, and one went the distance to the national finals in two events. Matthew Delzer, Berry director of forensics, and Hope Willoughby, assistant director of forensics, coach and serve as lecturers for the Communication Department.

Berry College Music Department's Vocal Honors Recital

Berry College's Music Department's top vocalists performed in the annual Vocal Honors Recital. The Vocal Honors Recital is a prestigious opportunity where students audition to be one of the nine chosen to perform. "These singers were selected by independent judges from Georgia State University and Atlanta Opera," said Berry Music Lecturer Ruth Baker. Each student performs two songs, including Operatic Literature, Art Song Literature, and Musical Theatre.

Berry College Student Receives Prestigious Fulbright Award

Berry College senior Taylor Blaylock has received a Fulbright grant to teach English in Taiwan during the 2021-22 academic year. Blaylock will graduate in May with a major in elementary education and minors in Applied Behavior Analysis and Teaching English as a Foreign Language. She has been on the Dean's List since 2017 and on the Athletic Academic Honor Roll since 2018. During her time in college, Blaylock was inducted into the honor societies of Kappa Delta Pi (International Honor Society in Education), Phi Kappa Phi (Honor Society of Superior Scholarship), and Lambda Sigma (National Honor Society for Second-Year Students). She is also a member of the Berry Swim and Dive Team. She has worked as a teacher's assistant at the Berry College Child Development Center and as an associate at School Aged Child Care in Tennessee, where she will work during the summer before she leaves for Taiwan in August. Blaylock, who is from Nolensville, Tenn., said she admires Taiwan's successful educational system and looks forward to learning Mandarin. She hopes to visit China, South Korea, and Japan during her time in Taiwan, and will enjoy exploring Taiwanese culture. The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 with the intention to promote international goodwill through the exchange of students in the fields of education, culture, and science. It is the largest U.S. exchange program and awards approximately 2,200 grants annually in all fields of study. Fulbright operates in more than 160 countries worldwide. Blaylock is the sixth Berry student to win a Fulbright grant since 1991. Previous awards went to Robin Leblanc (Japan 1991), Samantha Hiner (Spain 2010), Phat Huynh (Vietnam 2011), Lauren Fenner (South Korea 2011), and Zachary Wroblewski (Slovak Republic 2016).
